History of Mekedatu
The place has a mythological backstory Mekedatu means goat's leap in Kannada. A long time ago when a farmer was grazing his cattle he saw a goat being chased by a tiger, with nowhere to run the goat was headed straight into the Cauvery River The goat took a leap of faith and leapt to the other side of the gorge and the tiger abandoned the chase. This goat is said to be lord Shiva himself and that's why there is a temple dedicated to lord Shiva on top of the hills and hence the name Mekedatu. The gorge has expanded from the time of the goat's leap due to erosion from the river Cauveri and you can see imprints of the goat's hooves on the other side, though the prints appear bigger than that of a goat's hooves, it is said to be a divine goat.

It is better to admire it from afar.
How to reach Mekedatu
You can drive to Sangama by crossing Kanakapura or you can board a bus to Sangama. once you reach Sangama you'll have to take a boat to get to the other side of the river. From there you can catch a bus to Mekedatu which is available every half an hour. The last bus to Mekedatu is at 5:30 PM after that nobody is allowed. Alternatively, you can walk to Mekedatu after getting off the boat it is a good 5 to 6-km trek to Mekedatu. On the way to Mekedatu, you'll find Galibore fishing camp.
